Virginia was known for her loving and vibrant personality, who’s peach cobbler and apple sauce cake were family favorites. Della was also a great cook, and on special occasions would make her savory gumbo, representative of her Louisiana roots. Although she had a quiet demeanor, she was very vocal and passionate when it came to politics and her Christian faith. There were core similarities between the women, but there was a definite yin and yang thing going on! Glenita and Kenya feel so blessed to have had these women be the role models that influenced the spicy and sweet sides of their own personalities! The tea selections of the brand reflect the comforts of home and family ties. Teas include rich black teas, earthy greens, and herbal tisanes full of flavor. There’s something for everyone! Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, she was the fourth born of nine kids! The best word to describe her is the word “neat.” As kids, when Grandmother Della would arrive, we loved to watch her unpack. Items were neatly folded and sorted just so, and her voice was always measured and soft. If we were lucky, she visited during the holidays and she would make her famous gumbo; well at least amongst our family it was famous! Delicious Louisiana comfort food, that was made with love. If she couldn’t visit, she would write us letters for Christmas. The letters she wrote always reminded us first and foremost to say our prayers. We also remember being so proud when she recognized how well we did in school in the letters! She was the kind of person that you just wanted approval from. And when you got it, you cherished it. One Christmas, we unfolded the fine tissue paper of our gift from Grandmother to find that she had handmade a pair of terry cloth robes from bath towels that had beautiful yellow and brown embroidery! Looking back, we really wish we had kept those robes. But the Christmas gift that year was not just the robes, but the letter. This expression of love from a father to his daughters was so special. It wasn’t just about chocolates. Daddy taught us what it felt like to be loved, and thought of. How to know that if someone loves you, there’s a way that you should be treated, cherished. Even the little things like making sure to teach us about “ladies first,” and that if a man happened to be with you at the gas station, he had better pump the gas! But our Grandmother Virginia insisted on taking us to church with her every Easter Sunday! It was fun to put on our matching fluffy Easter dresses and patent leather Mary Jane shoes each year. Grandmother proudly strolled into the church, holding each of our little hands, as she introduced us to all of her church friends. This was her space, and we knew it meant a lot to her to have us by her side. We marveled at the women who wore their beautiful and ornate hats, and the men who wore their sharp suits and heavy cologne to impress! We’re so appreciative that our grandmother gifted us with the experience of the Black church, which has historically been a prime source of community and solace, and even a place of safety, for Black Americans.
